BAD NEWS, CLUTHA RIVER UNDER THREAT!!! You may or may not be aware that an electricity company called Contact energy has plans to dam the Clutha in possibly four locations. Two of the options would see the mighty Clutha drowned in the upper reaches . Those of you that have fished with me will realise that this will be the end of this beautiful part of river and of course my business, not to mention many others as well. This river is not just a world class fishery but is also used by many kayakers, rafters, jetboaters, triathletes.etc If you would like to see more information about these proposed dams and maybe sign a petition against then please go to www.savetheclutha.blogspot.com
Summer We are starting to come to the end of summer now and after the Clutha river being high for all of Dec and half of Jan it steadily dropped to the point of it being low. During this time we have had some exceptional fishing especially with the dry fly. Large terrestrials have worked great with imitations of cicada and blowfly taking some beautiful browns in very shallow water. The nights are starting to cool now and this should see the reappearance of more mayflys. This is my favourite time of year to fish. The leaves are changing, mayflys on the water and some large browns and rainbows making their way up river. All we need is some calm clear days now and we will be in for some fun.
Spring Well spring has finally arrived and we have seen some good early hatches of Mayfly already. The Rainbows in particular are looking up and are feeding from the top . I had the pleasure of taking fishing and hunting writer Greg Morton on Sunday. He managed to land 12 nice trout with a good mix of browns and rainbows . See photos of 2 nice rainbows he landed.
Winter After many bed time stories and promises of a drift fishing trip in the raft with dad I finally took my two oldest kids Maggie (5) and James (3) .
The Clutha was running low and clear and there were lots of fish spotted and a few unlucky ones caught and released.
Our next trip I'm told is going to be a camp out. Roll on summer!! |
